On the way back East from California with Polack Bros. Circus we would usually show Harlengen. Texas down in the Valley. One year either 1965 or '66 Gene appeared on the lot one morning, Circo Bells was showing in Monterrey and he had come up to the border to check out an elephant that had been stranded there. He brought me a program from the show where a few of these pictures came from. I was surprised to see that he was now Jim Bells, I think he had married into the family. Later in the day we both went out to see the elephant and it turned out to be "Betty" from the Diano herd who had a bad reputation. It seems that both she and "Katy" had been sold to Mexico but in usual Diano fashion, having already been paid, he simply had his man Charlie drive them down from Canton and left it up to the Mexicans to figure out how to unload them. Streamline (Francis Frizzel) managed to get involved and was promptly knocked down and kicked around by "Betty" so she was abandoned. Somehow she was moved to a sale barn nearby and was chained in a stock pen. I have a couple of poor polaroid pictures someone took of us cleaning out her pen and Gene swapping her leg chains around. I later heard that before Gene could get the red tape sorted out "Betty" had either injured or killed someone and had been shot.

Looks like a photo from the Al G. Barnes Show. Was this a one time photo or did this act appear regularly twice a day. Either way it's impressive.
If they put that load on the little bull, how many kids to they put on the elephant ride?
I really think this is a doctored photo.
Buckles,
You know that Betty we had at Jungleland. Rugged reputation. From what you're saying here, I presume it's not the same Betty. I heard ours was sold to some business who staked her out front to draw customers, and later...that's it--I'm sure what to beleive about what happened to the Compound Betty. Do you know?
Damn. I meant to say I'm not sure what happened to Betty. I just looked at a photo of Rebecca and forgot myself.
Joining the Polack Show in 1965 presented a problem since there was no room for Anna May in their truck.
So we decided to locate "Betty" somewhere when we were on the coast.
Our last date out there was the Pomona Fair after which I dropped her off at Jungleland then headed east for Harlengen where Smokey had Anna May waiting. In fact we were in the process of working her into the act when Gene Garner showed up, so that would make his visit definately in 1965.
"Betty" remained at Jungleland until the 1969 auction when she was sold to a guy who intended to display her at his resaurant in Phoenix (bad mistake) wasn't long before she took charge and had to be shot.
Buckles, What you just said about "BETTY" taking charge and had to be shot. I have nightmares of this happening in TENN when "THE DIVAS" decide to take over. Once they get started there will be no stopping them except for a bullet in the head.
It would have been kinder to "SUE" if they had done this to her. Instead she suffered for weeks.
