Emmett Kelly 1942

Quite a bit of controversy over Barry Bonds home run record, some say it should be noted that it was achieved with the aid of Steroids.
I think the same should be applied to the Ken & Nicole clowns. An asterisk should be placed in the program pointing out that the number had been enhanced by the "binks" and "bonks" of a Looney Toon sound track.
Either that or have the sound man listed in Clown Alley.
I can hear Lou Jacobs saying to Pat Valdo, "I need two hiccups and a barf in the background or it won't be funny".

Harry Rawls once talking with Jimmy James about a gag said, "If a five year old dosn't laugh at it it isn't funny".

Never was impressed with talking clowns or ones that needed adult humor [that will probably cause someone to complain!].

Will I'm chiming in this morning Buckles - another good recording of "Real" Circus Music just became available.

It is Merle Evans leading the 30 piece RBB&B band under canvas in 1955. It was recorded in Miami by a good circus fan with a reel to reel recorder. And once again John Johnson, the master of cleaning up recordings, has done a great job of producing it on a 2 CD set. It basically contains the music for over 40 different acts.

$20.00 for 2 CD's
$5.00 Shipping & Handling

Went to the ballet Sunday afternoon. A very good friend is one of the two choreographers. We were talking after the performance and all of a sudden, knowing my circus interest, he starts in about the Ringling show he saw here at the Patriot Center this Spring [Washington, DC]. "What happened to the beautiful costumes the show use to have? The dances were never together. So few performers the building seemed empty. Not much to watch at one time, became boring at times with the lack of action, etc.!" I thought wow, JQ public's perception! I told him if he thought that was bad wait until next year when they attempt to have a house cat act out there all by itself to fill the cavernous facility!

If the PR people interview enough people after the performance they can find someone who will say what they want to print - ingnoring the negative comments. You can prove anything you want with statistics!

I watched the Marx Brothers film AT THE CURCUS the other night. Their antics approach my level of intelligence. In doing on-line research trying to see if any of the circus backgrounds could have been a real circus I stumbled on PETA's web site. I was really shocked at the contents.

The thing that caught my eye was the list of criminal convictions on people remotely connected with circus. What does a car theft rap on a member of Carson and Barnes or an attempted theft, or even an attempted rape, by a Big Apple employee have to do with the treatment of animals?

Is this to say that ALL CIRCUS PEOPLE are criminals and people who are cruel to animals? Gee, what did I do? I sent my two sons to work at the Big Apple, have they been scarred, are they now criminals; and what about those families with children and grand children I met during my short stay with the Ringling Show are they all scroundrels?

I must confess, when I first saw Buckles with the Big Apple, he came after my time on The Big Show,I thought he is rather boring because he didn't jump around and throw out his arms at the end of each trick all he did as walk beside that big ole Elephant. Then, after a couple of shows I came to realize that he was talking, whispering, to Anna May all the time going aroudn the ring and she was listening and responding. A true bond of love between man and beast that I had never before experienced. It was an exciting revelation to me.

What are these PETA people thinking? Have they never been around animals, have they never been around a circus, have they never been around circus families? Do they not understand the bond between animal and man?

Buckles or anyone that might know. Is Antonio Hoyos working Las Vegas? I saw a small part of a program on HBO and could have sworn Antonio doing a stage act? He wasn't in the Chaplin character but was in makeup and is alittle heavier?Just wondering if anyone knows where he is and what he's doing now?

The thing that always impressed me about Buckles in the ring was the way he made the animals the star of the ring not himself. His wardrobe spoke volumes so he did not have to jump around to get noticed. Then again how could he compete with Barbara? You always noticed the elephants first. Now this was before the kids came along. Wait until you see Baby Kays hind leg walk!!!! Coming soon to the blog.
