Another Zoo ride elephant was Miss Jim (named for the Supt. of Schools) at the St. Louis Zoo. She was purchased from Wm. Hall about 1915, " with the pennies of school children" and a few dollars more. To thank the children, they gave rides on Miss Jim for years. No howdah (sp?), just a rug on her back -- the days before lawyers. She died at the Zoo in 1946.
Buckles, Jim A. just mentioned a Miss Jim bought from Wm. P. Hall. I have her recorded at the zoo. Did she have a circus background also if she came through the Hall farm? Bob

Babe at the Toledo zoo was also a howdah elephant,at least before it killed its keeper in front of a horrified crowd.
Would you repeat that Terry, I missed it!
When did the saddle styles howdies become prominent and are these "bench" style howdies still in use??
The type howdahs we see today came into use in the 1960's and were a blessing since it disributes he weight so much better.
I'm sure the keeper deserved his fate.
