You can go to the Hum.Soc. main page (HSUS), click Legislation, scroll down to "Bill Finder" and search for any animal or industry. No idea how accurate their reports are, but it's a way to check what's in the works, and which proposals may expire at the end of session unread.
One thing we need to do is to educate the media & the public, that,"The Humane Society Of The United States", is an "animal rights group" and is in no way affiliated with the government. I wouldn't hit on their web site to find out anything!!!!
Im convinced that Jumbo was at least about 11 feet 6 inches tall at the shoulder when he got killed in 1885. Reportly he was measured right before he left the London zoo in 1882 at an even 11 feet tall. So Jumbo disser's go un-prove that!!!
To 24-hour man: Once they put anything into published words, we have a way to fight that proposal openly.
When web pages urge readers to contact Congress, that gives us a chance to speak out too -- to prevent bad laws. That is the only reason to see what they are up to these days. Sorry if I gave a wrong impression. "Know your enemies," was the idea. Lotliza
Lotliza, I agree with you, it's just that they are my favorite gripe, they have everyone fooled into thinking they are an authority on animal matters, and even have officials asking their help, & advise. I do understand they are getting some heat over the New Orleans thing, like, "what happened to the money".
Much has been written about Jumbo's height with the numbers coming in at just under or just over 11 feet. One of the soundest points for the "just under" assessment was made by Wm. Blacburn. He was with Jumbo on the Barnum & London show. Blackburn later became the first supt. of the new National Zoo in Washington.
Jumbo rode in a special built elephant car. It had a well or drop frame so as to accomodate Jumbo's great height without making the car so tall it could not clear bridges and tunnels. Jumbo rode in this well. Blackburn said that the inside height of the car from the floor of the well to the ceiling was an even 11 feet. And a man could put the width of several fingers between the high point of Jumbo's back and the ceiling of the car. So, he was a few inches short of 11 ft.
AS informaton, the tallest modern elephant ever recorded is the one shot in Angola in 1955 by J. J. Fenykovi. He stood 13'-2" and may be seen today in the rotunda of Smithsonian's Natural History Museum.
Mike Hackenburger's African male Angus stood 11'-2" He died within the last year or so at Mike's Bowmanville, Ontario zoo.
There are now many African males in captivity that are real monsters. That is caused by the abundance of Africans in capivity now vs.50 years ago. They were once rare as hens-teeth both in zoos and on circuses. For example, there was not a single African on Ringling from around 1910 until 1936. Moreover I cannto find evidence of one on any of the old Corporation shows from 1900 until they disappeared in 1938. Let me qualify that. The Barnes show did get two Africans in its final year (1938) but they were Ringling animals added when RBBB sent its features to Barnes in mid-season.
