That looks like "Peggy", the clown may have been an impostor, doesn't look remotely familiar. The man leading the elephant came from the Red Show and was inclined to use wacky tobaccy on occasion causing Gunther to state "What's the matter with you? You always fly high!". Hence the name "High Flyer".
Thanks Bud, now I remember him. I have a close up with him and my sister,I can see his face better on it but I haven't sent it to Buckles-yet.Names are starting to come into my little head, remembering more all the time! It's like coming out of a coma! I remember Gina, the dance captain's husband Bill. He was the second Clown Fairy on Mickey and her brothers day off. Bill and I had crude nicknames for each other. I called him Fece the Clown, because he was shitty at it! Just jokeing him and he called me "Def" short for defecation, because I shoveled it! Funny the little things this blog has brought to mind! Thanks Buckles! Gary
To Anonymous, After a few days of Inflated EGO, I must apologize to you, that I for the life of me can't remember your name! I KNOW as soon as I find out, if ever, I will remember it and be quite embarressed as I am now not knowing it!!!!!!!!!!Faces I never forget but names fail me! Always, Gary
Gary, I really don't think it is my face you would remember. Alas you would never remember me now as you did not notice me in the pool way back then. I was always looking at you. Also I was not a performer.
All the ladies got all of our attention in the pool believe me! Dear Farlyn used to play grab under water to check on our conditions! All I remember was some nights the water was cold and well you know about "shrinkage'? LOL! Anyway, my faithful sidekick, and fellow sluthe, Little John and I have come to the conclusion of who you are and we know WHY I never made an pass at you! Remember a Blond Lion Trainer? Gary
Anyone not connected with the circus would think we were still the young group of entertainers that we were 30 years ago. Circus folks are kids forever. We really are mature people with kids and grandkids. You really had to have been in the business to understand all this childishness we are writing about. It was a life like no other. Sometimes I wonder how we survived. You just had to be there.`
I have to agree, though the bad part is that at CW alot of us just thought of it as a stopover to bigger and better things. I know Buckles was about to fulfill his dream - To be the BOSS Elephant Man on the "Greatest Show on Earth"! Jewel was excited that a country boy from Tenn would be an American Lion Trainer on the Big Show! I was excited to just be a small part of Their Success! And of course being groom for the Best Tiger Trainer there probably ever was- Charly Baumann was and still is a Special thrill I will carry to the grave! Circus World only lasted a very small time but the times we had and the people we crossed paths with made it "The Greatest Place on Earth"! I know that was the theme just thought it FIT!
How cool! If the tramp clown is Jim Gourley, then that's my dad- I knew he clowned, but never knew for what show(s). As far as I knew, for that time period, he worked with Jewell with the cats. (Forgive my ignorance- I was just a toddler in Jersey at the time).
If my memory serves my accurately, it was Jim who convinced me to GO FOR IT by being a clown. I think that he was among the cast of clowns that left because CW wanted the clowns to Meet and Greet in the park before and between shows without paying them more. That was the year that Buckles, and Jewel went on RBBB, and many of the original cast went their separate ways. I think that CW was Jim’s first clowning gig and perhaps he was hired as a groom. Back in the day, as the cage was pulled from the ring curb, the shoots were the last thing to be put in place to let the traffic of floats, trains, and props, go by. Anyone who was available helped push a shoot to start the show on time, and as the cats were let into the shoots the task of keeping the certain cats away from each other was quite intense, and anyone who could recognize the cats, and who had a knack at such things were encouraged to lend a hand, so to speak. I remember Jim being involved in this. Jim was very helpful to me when I was a First of May.
Thanks lj & gary for the memories!! (& Thanks to Buckles as well of course for hosting thisgreat blog!!) My recollections of that time are sketchy cause well.. I was, like, 4, but I know he left in @ 79-ish due to a broken ankle, which I was always told was due to "he (Dad) was warming up the motorcycle for Jewell to ride with Kenneth (lion) and the kickstand failed & fell on his ankle". Later on, when we joined the Blue Show in '81- my dad worked as a groom with Charly Baumann, so I just figured he did the same for Jewell. As a little girl, I remember quite a few times waking up to find Jewell passed out among my toys in my playroom & "Uncle Buck" (Buck Nolan) stretched out across our family room floor- so I know they were pretty good friends.

Good Show !!! He really was not a blond. Neither was she. Skinny dipping bares all. Even in the dark.
One question, define performer? Were you a dancer or not? The mystery deepens methinks?
Hope this Blog reaches heaven, and all our old friends are getting a chuckle out of this because it always good to have someone save you a good seat.

I don't remember him working with Jewell's lions but I do remember him clowning.
