"Mike" has obviously picked up every bad habit he could. The martingale is to keep him from attacking people and the hobbles and cross-hobbles from running away and destroying things. I'm sure it was no picnic for his handlers either, always a chance for injury just moving him around and difficult at best loading and unloading him even when he cooperated. Why did management put everyone thru this? Because it was just the type thing the American public wanted and paid to see.
100 years later tastes and situations have changed. Women, now liberated, have become Policemen, Firemen and even Senators. Those with more modest ambitions have become Crusaders (90 per cent of the Animal Rights members are women) and dedicated to solving the world's animal problems. However there is one small price to be paid for these advancements, the American School System must now cope with the liberated child and is forced to employ many of these new Policemen as well as the use of metal detectors to help lower the mortality rate among student body and faculty. Well, you can't have everything.

Ya know, another cup of coffee in the morning raises your spirits!
Tough to be the first responder but here goes..I believe the biggest proponents of animal rights are city people-men & women. No one lives or uses large working animals on a daily basis anymore. 100 yrs ago the farmers came to the shows and would look at those chains with marvel-I got a horse that could use those chains, etc. Now it's empathy that comes from pictures and this bull could be a poster child for peta if you did not know why you used the hobbles. There are reasons you buy meat in packages now- city kids would starve if they had to wring a chickens neck or chop off its head-castrating goats is not a good reason to have a cookout in the city.
The very best written word Buckles. Never have I ever read a more true, honest opinion. I agree with you 100 persent. We see this everyday. There is a small riot everyday at the bus stop in front of my house among the "children". The words that come out of their mouths would make sailors blush in shame. And this is the girls.
I agree with anonymous that 100 years ago everyone depended on horse power for even simple things like going to the grocery store. They had first hand knowledge how difficult a horse could be and certainly appreciated a well diciplined one.
I once read that when horses pulled trolly cars, if one would slip on the ice and fall the passengers might alight and proceed to kick and flog the animal until it regained it's footing. "Damn horse made me late for work!"
However I still contend that it's mostly the women on a maternal, feel good mission and it's the men who mostly count the beans.
At a fair in Almish country years ago, the group paid extra for a whole performance of " Horse Fantasy Review" without the music or trappings. They just wanted to see the beautiful horses doing their act. These people lived and worked with horses still. They could appriciate the work that went into careing for these animals. This man who worked and owned these animals has been the main target of peta and that sanctuary in Tenn for over ten years. The Almish are people who really know about animal care. Its all about fund raising now and they are making millions off the people who don't know any better.
Buckles, was Mike just tough or was he at the age he was going through "Musth"? Did this show travel on rails or walk? Thanks, Gary
I agree Buckles ! Hopefully this overall out of focus 'Space Age Trend ' overpowering us all to rapidly will level off & settle down soon; be usefull to an extent & not have destroyed the natural assets of our Earth, Human Sprits, Abilities, Joys etc.! I think the battle for control is " out of control " ? Hello Everybody ! - Bud Copeland
Once upon a time, mothers protected their children. Now that they are protecting animals the children are being killed and running amuck. As you say " we can't have everything". The choice is a very sad one.
It's advertising, remember. Ads use animals, pretty girls, or children. Cruel fate: x decided decades ago to use elephants to get people talking a lot of bull about death. You can bet when a zoo announces, "We are just waiting for her to die," someone in the background will put skids under that animal soon (wrong food). Eventually, they'd like to "mercy" kill everyone older than 60. First, they need millions used to their slogans and very few asking where they will lead. A good circus gets people thinking about strength, grace, and new possibilities. Some groups want all history forgotten asap. Just a theory. Thank You 4 remembering a century of real life so vividly.
I certainly hope I havn't come across this morning as against progressive women.
I think that insisting hurricanes not be named after women exclusively and the removal of young ladies pictures from Military Aircraft were causes long overdue.
Furthermore, without "Nicole" the
"The Ken Show" would sound silly.
I suppose we can cross our fingers and hope that when Mr. Feld retires Miss Feld will wake up one fine morning and think to herself, "I miss the circus we owned when I was a kid."
Or some elephant hunk could court her. Nah Even I could not do that to an elephant hunk. Gary how is your schedule? Take a walk through an elephant barn and see what you can step in.
When are you going to use your real name? I scoop the poop, never step in it! GAry
Gary, I wrote that last comment abput the elephant poop. GEE GEE says that women can not resist the smell and that is what I ment. You seem to be the focus of the females right now. Thats why I chose you to do the deed for the sake of the circus. I am stepping in it all the time.
Buckles, have you ever seen the documentary about Coney Island that showed the electrocution of the big male elephant (whose name I cannot recall)?
After the elephant had eaten one too many folks for lunch, they brought Thomas Edison's people over from New Jersey to execute him with that new-fangled electricity.
I wonder what the peta crowd would think of that video!
The Forepaugh "Tops" that was electrocuted at Coney Island reportly had been the largest elephant and a star performer with the Forepaugh show before they sold her to the owners of Luna Park
not to long after she killed some people.
BTW can anyone confirm that a elephant with the Honest Bill Newton show was electrocuted in Little Rock Arkansas back in the 1920's?Reportly when they did it,it left the city in darkness for a short time. One source says it was,but another source says it wasnt.
Actually I need to make a correction.According to the Brooklyn Dailey Eagle of May.28.1902.
"Tops" was the second largest elephant of the Forepaugh-Sells show(weighing 4 and a half tons). She was however the best performer and one of the most valuable elephants in the world.
Her trainer was Bill Emery.
The article also briefly mentions the female African elephant"Topsy"
of the show.
You can see a photo of "Tops" over at
Brooklynpubliclibrary.org
just type in Tops elephant Forepaugh in the search there then go to article in PDF,and there is a photo of her in the May.28.1902 edition.
