John H. Sparks "Old Virginia Shows"

This show was always well thought of, I never heard of them ever leaving any heat when they left town. During this time they moved on 10 cars (9 back and 1 ahead).

Was that High Wire act outside the tent to draw the crowd? Or the artist idea to include it in the picture? Artist can pretty much do what they want, not like a camara.

Right you are, except you and I are too young to remember those days. At times, circuses had free acts out front, serving much the same purpose for the Big Show as the bally platform did for the Side Show--just enough to turn the tip.

Free acts on the circus midway aren't THAT far in the distant past. I recall seeing a revolving ladder act conducted atop the Kelly-Miller sideshow front in about '96 or '97. Also seem to remember that Dick Garden may have had a free act in front of his Sterling & Reid show a few years back.
