"Horse less carriages" go back with the circus as far back as 1864,
of course they were steam powered with a boiler in the back.
They use to lead the procession into town,then a lecture was given in the tent to the local rubes about it.
BTW The famous author,H.G Wells wasnt born until 1866.
(I read all this in a book too.)
I think the date on this picture is 1876 and I hardly expected the driver to be the same Wells that wrote books.
