On the back someone wrote:
"Bert Pettus and his daughter on Clyde Bros. Circus 1951.
Bull Suzie Q."

This is in error since "Suzie" was with Ring Bros. Circus
throughout most of the 1950's. So the writer either had the
wrong elephant or the wrong show.

Well known elephant photographer Homer Walton sitting on
"Carrie" (originally named after Carrie Royal) on the King Show
lot in 1955 with Bert trying to get out of the picture.
Mr. Walton specialized in elephant pix but unfortunately insisted
on being in most of them. He lived near the Diamond O Ranch
and probably left a room full of shots sitting Tommy's tusks.

These next two pictures taken in Grand Rapids, Michigan on the
Orrin Davenport winter dates in 1955.
Some familiar names in this combination "Little Babe", "Tessie",
"Margie, "Mary and "Judy".
In both shots you can barely see Elephant Empress Sandy Pettus.

in his day was regarded as the Paul Gutheil of the mid-West.
This particular shot taken on the Rogers Bros. lot in 1952 with
"Shirley Temple".

Hi again Buckles,

I just got the OK to pass this on to you. Please read the posts below and let the blog know that Henry is ailing and will not be posting for a while. I don't know how I could say it any better than Henry did in his own words, so if you want to cut and paste his reply that is fine. It is always so hard to get this kind of news and I am sure Henry will appreciate any well wishes and support at this time.

Hi Ron,

Had a look at Buckles Blog and replied but had a look just know and my answer didn come thru. So here it goes and then you can put it on his blog.. As you told them I live 1000km north of Christchurch on the North Island and we didn feel anything here. But nice to know that I have friends all over the world who care and I am very grateful for that.
Three weeks ago I discover that I had a cancers tumor in my colon and 12 days ago I had a operation where the removed 3/4 of my colon. Waiting know for the lab results to find out if I need chemotherapies or not. Hopefully I am lucky and the doctor got it all the first time. Got out of the hospital 3 days ago and feel very week. Lost 11kg and look like I am 80 years old.
Ok my friend, get back to you again when I feel stronger, reading is ok but writing takes the energy out of me.

Buckles, I was just given a stack of photos by showfolk Charlotte Hazen. Hal and Charlotte toured with TOBY TYLER CIRCUS and with GREAT AMERICAN CIRCUS. In checking my files, I only find a few photos that have appeared on your blog of Toby Tyler. I would like to send photos of Toby Tyler over the next few weeks. This series is dedicated to the memory of Hal Hazen who worked in the band and in the office of circuses and to Charlotte Hazen who worked in various capacities including office manager of Great American. Both of these wonderful people were true circus showfolks. The photos appear to start in winter quarters.

Hello Buckles,

The fine people of Hugo are hard at work making the Circus City Museum and Park a reality. The original plan was to renovate the house which stands on one of the lots for the museum. The board has now decided to dismantle it and have purpose-built buildings, per the attached drawing.

As a fund-raiser, the Museum will be holding its first annual “International Red Nose Café” night in Hugo. The plan is to serve dishes from around the world that are favorites of circus people, particularly if the recipe has a story or special significance to it. We would be very grateful if you would post this. This photo first time I have seen it, given to me by well known Australian circus fan Michael Robertson taken in late 20s or 30s Perry,s. Must have been doing a one off agricultural show you call them (fairs) 4 ladies on the line up board L TO R are my aunt Daphne ,my Mum, (sister) Doris Perry/ Phyillis Perry/ & My Mother Vera Perry elephant on the right is Tommy a Bull who killed his trainer in Parkes NSW in 1937. also an elephant far left.

Sherry was going thru some archives at the Florida Orchestra and found some materials of interest to the blog.

In 1972 Emmett Kelly performed with the Orchestra on a Christmas show at Bayfront Auditorium (now renamed the MaHaffey Theatre).

The Martin Beck Theater on West 45th Street

opened in 1924 by Beck who lived there in an

opulent apartment adjacent to the upper lobby

until his death in 1940

His estate sold it to James Binger (3M family heir)

in 1958 who established Jujamcyn Theaters named

for his 3 children (Judith James Cynthia)

In June of 2003 the name was changed to Al Hirshfeld

in honor of the famous N Y Times caricaturist who

had died in January of that year just shy of 100

(my very favorite N Y theater)
