Red Show 2009 #2

Since Shannon and Melissa worked late, Barbara decided to stay home with Jamie. This was my gang plus the daughter of our next door neighbor.
The Wizard Hats came with the $12 floss and need no explanation.

Blanket on every other elephant. I suggested that they might cut them down the middle and hang one half of each on the outside so they will have a full set.

The Vanishing Elephant!
The tip off came to me right away when I noticed that the 10,000 pound elephant was being towed by a golf cart.

Mr. and Mrs. Zingmaster in the background.

No flying act this year and has been replaced by these Chinese contraptions that glide slowly back and forth while people wearing mechanics are vaulted from catcher to catcher.

For some reason they appear to be wearing surplus Bello wigs trimmed down.

Cannon closes the first half, no spec as we know it.

These four Russian swings are rigged together and this troupe is truly incredible.

Once the leapers take flight the men on the ground hold the swing steady and then drop it when he returns. In other words a leaper will be vaulted straight up, do a double somersalt and return standing to the to the same swing he had just left.
For a finish they will exchange swings in the same fashion.

Joe Frisco has vastly improved the elephant act since the last time I saw this show.

Not only works the elephant act but makes the coloring book pitch at intermission.

Blue Show 1978 #1 (From Eric Beheim)

1978 RBBB-1, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

Playing in the band, I would never get to see the Ringling show when it was in San Diego, and would always have to drive up to Anaheim or Long Beach to catch a performance or two there. In 1978, for the 108th Edition (my all-time favorite) I saw the show in Anaheim and again in Long Beach. I arranged to be in Long Beach on a Saturday so I could take photos in the backyard during the morning show, and then attend the matinee and evening shows. Here are my Kodachrome color slides from that day. (I’m counting on Buckles to provide us with background information on who and what we are seeing in these photos.)

In this picture Gary and I watch Ted as he wipes out "Anna May's" mouth prior to the leg-carry."

"This picture brings up an interesting debate among elephant men. Being lazy, I always loaded headed the other direction and walked counter clockwise, placing me on the inside and walking the shorter distance.
I have been told by several parties that the above arrangement is best since it allows you to see if all the riders are loaded and secure however this attendant is behind the elephant.
I see that the camels are headed clockwise as well, a beast with which I am unfamiliar."

These two trailers carried the props and rigging used on the outdoor dates."
