Interred with Mr. Gardner are Arky Scott and Louis Roth.

Louis Frank Roth was born on October 4, 1883, to Frank Voros and Rosalia Bedoe, in Jah, Hungary. He died on October 21, 1949, in Selah, Washington, at age 66, of cancer.

Eugene Howard "Arky" Scott was born in Louisiana, with a birthdate given on his death certificate as August 8, 1905, although he told me he did not know for sure how old he was. His parents were both unknown to him. Arky died of cancer on April 11, 1968, in Thousand Oaks, California, with a listed age of 62.

We friends of his from Jungleland buried Arky on April 15, 1968. Five days later, on April 20th, Mabel Stark was found dead in her home. She directed there be no funeral or memorial service, and her ashes were scattered over the Pacific Ocean.

Frank Gardner was nicknamed "Cheerful"

because of his deadpan expression

He trained under George "Deafy" Denman

Frank "Cheerful" Gardner was born in Janesville, WI. He spent many years of the Corporation shows, heading up the John Robinson, then the Hagenbeck Wallace herds from 1923 to 1940. He closed out his career on the Howard Bary Zoo Train in 1951.

A bunch of us were once discussing the great herd bosses, and Freddie Logan at once proclaimed the greatest. In his familiar elephant boss voice, he said, "Cheerful Gardner!"
