"Marcella" #1 (To Adaline)

Scan10510, originally uploaded by bucklesw1. "Marcella" was brought into Circus World in early 1977 for retirement. She spent her days in the barn on display and her nights on the outside picket line. Before long she began to decline rapidly and finally one morning she was unable to arise. We had "Anna May" help her to her feet using collar chains, a procedure we followed for the next few days but it was easy to see the end was in sight.

Scan10511, originally uploaded by bucklesw1. At last the day came when she could no longer stand, seen here still wearing her collar chain from that morning's final attempt to save her. We erected this tarp to protect her from the blazing sun while we awaited the Vet who put her to sleep. MARCELLA Imported into Bridgeport Quarters in Nov. of 1922. 1923-76 Ringling-Barnum Circus (54 seasons in storm and sunshine) (Died at the Ringling Circus World Park in 1977). I never noticed anything on her that looked like scars from being burned and if there were, they would have come from the Cleveland menagerie fire of 1942 not Hartford.
