I've seen his name spelled many different ways, usually Horwath. I think his pronunciation was typical in his tongue, of making the "w" sound like "v". I enjoyed meeting him many times. There are fine photos of him in the World Jungle Compound arena with a splendid-looking group of pumas. I could never do what he did, though--if I tried, I couldn't keep my jungle hat on during the act.
Roger S.
I was a good buddy with Joe bon the Gil Gray Show, but I remember first seeing him on Daily Bros. I was his witness when he got his American citizen paper. He told me that he came to South America as a cage man for "Blacaman" from Europe, stayed there for many years before coming to US. I was priveleged to watch and help him train and believe he knew his business. He married Eva Vasquez and later with his sons had a Chimp act. He lived up into his ninties. Yes, Roger he would not take that helmut off because he was completely bald headed. Quite a character and am glad I was his friend.I believe it was Horvath, but generally he was Horwath.
Joe and family had their chimp act on the Vidbel Show's second season, sometime in the mid 80's.
Very nice folks and true pro's; nothing could stop these show folks.
A little trivia: Joe Horwath was the trainer who picked up 4 tigers and 2 lions, part of the act Dick McGraw trained, and 3 lions that belonged to Jules Jacot that St. Louis Zoo sold to Carson and Barnes in January 1970. The lion/ tiger act animals were older and I don't know how long they were on the show. Jules' lions were around long enough to break in a few trainers.
