One thing I found unique about Al Vidbel was that he would turn the ponies loose at the picket line and they would follow him to and from the circus ring.
Before "Johnny can say it" ...
You know why he did that; cause he couldn't afford a groom or was that the harness ?

J.C. Hall,
That's how Bill Buschbam did it, and later Johnny Cline with horses, not ponies. Not a major deal, but the main reason it is not done is that if one or more should spook and go walk about it might cause a big problem. Pretty risky. Some folks are dumbfounded when a horse can find it's place in line or back at the stable. Again, cow's do it every day on the dairy farm.

I led horses a many time for Bill Bucshbam and for Johnny Cline. Ponies and the Buschbam horses after Johnny purchased them from Bill, never the less Al Vidbels ponies followed him better than a dog trainers dogs, and yes I have seen a horsey follow its owner before.
P.S. The next time you work a liberty horse act on a circus you can show me how it's done. All kidding aside.
The fact that they can spook is why it was unique. Al's did not.
Herding cows to and from a field is a bit different than a "Circus".

J. C. Hall,
It is Burck, spelled the same way that your daughter does.
I or no one can show you how it is done. That's fact all kidding aside.
It is the same thing, but a little different. The cow's aren't herded, they do it on their own, at a designated time, rarely fluctuating 10 min. either way through their milking life. The difference is the circus assumes the farmer is God, because the animals did what they do naturally. It wasn't studied it was just assumed your/my God could do it, and everyone elses God couldn't.

You bet that was great that the ponies went with Al without any leaders. Even when you tipped the prop boss[remember when there used to be prop boys] he was always reluctant to send any prop boys as leaders. Whitey Wilbur was the worst. nI needed six leaders to get the twele ponies in, so it was always a hastle. Elephant guys were pretty good helping. With out harness I would assume Als ponies would not hang around on a mud show or grassy lot. Al was a good trainer with the ponies and elephants. It was sad when Sherma tore him up. It used to be fun to work with him. Lots of times on the "Maine dates".tanglefoot

Yes, I was commandeered a lot to lead the lead stock over the reasons you have mentioned for as far back as I can remember; However I sure did not mind it a bit. Best place to be if you want to see a liberty act as you will get to see it numerous times and get to see who's who in regards to recovering F-ups, I might add, with much grace.
To W.G.Burk AKA W.G.Burck?
Lets see if I can get this straight
The next time you are working a liberty horse act on a circus, if you could let me know around that 10 minutes mark varience you mentioned so I can bear witness to the Almighty's hand at work as this grouping of horses follow you to and from the promise land.
PS.I am now not sure if I should have waited till Sunday to ask.

J. C. Hall,
You didn't get it right. That "10 minutes mark varience" was in reference to dairy cows coming in to get milked and each going to their assigned place without being told, or lead, following the one in front. The same "phenomena" is how a liberty horse finds and knows his place. John Milton has referenced it as "smelling asses", but science has suggested it is deeper then that.
Sunday's a great day, because that is when the Lord rests, and is available for consultation. LOL
