These were the Circus World liberty horses. They were purchased by George and Vickie Hasnneford. Joan had worked them at Circus World, and stayed with the act for a short while later. Soon after, their daughter Cathy began presenting them.
I could be wrong, but I think they were originally trained by Trevor Bale, and later re-routined by John Herriott.
This photo was taken on David Mobbs' Circus USA in Miami, FL.
Jimmy, Most of the Arabian horse's for this act(bay being an unusual color) were originally purchased from Alec Courtelis who owned Town and Country Arabians, at the time the largest Arabian racehorse breeder in the United States. They carried some great Polish blood from a horse named Kon Tiki. The Alec Courtelis Award is given each year at the International Student Academic
I remember Joan from Circus World, and I've been around the beautiful Arabians that were originally trained by Trevor Bale, and later re-routined by John Herriott. It was my honor to be around such greatness –trainers and horses. But my most memorial time was when this short tuff female groom showed me how to checker board the hind quarters when I helped her bathed the horses with that slimy soap as she braided the manes.
I may well have things mixed up from being there for most of a decade and experiencing all the talent come and go. Joan Renaldo or who ever it was who presented the Arabians, I did not know was married at the time. This was during the Great Western Stampede area when I was in the horse barn al lot because I did a pony act with the Andersons. Joan (or who ever) presented the Liberty act with an elegance that is to be admired. I remember she rode one of our beautiful but reluctant to behave Appaloosas. If I can filter through my enhanced memory I think her apparel on the Appaloosa was a black cowboy hat and black lady leather.
My Bad Little John! Remember I am back in the first few years of CW not the later. Joan Bale was a groom for Trevor, thats were I was going with it. :)
Joan came to Circus World as a cowgirl trick rider and had been trained and worked with Jackie Rhinehart. But she had a god given talent for training. Brahma Bull, Buffalo, etc. She was pretty much self taught in the liberty field but sure got the job done. A very pretty gal. She ended up with her own Brahma, horses, etc. Last I heard she was up in the Carolinas. She never worked for Trevor or for me but I knew her quite well thru Jackie Rhinehart, a great western roper, trick rider and western performer. Roman Riding, etc. Jackie had knowledge of liberty horses having been raised around circuses and circus horses. Jackie had two sisters and a brother. All very capable Wild West folks. Alot of older folks might remember on circus dates Charlie and Jewell Poplin and there hilarious "bucking Ford" act know as "the honeymooners" thats Jackies sister.
Yes, thank you Anonymous for surfacing that forgotten memory. Joan rode a big bull that would naturally make you take a step back. I was curious when Gary mixed up the Joan’s because our Joan briefly dated our Ringmaster Norm, that lucky man.

Little John, if you remember Joan then you remember her husband Donald Bale. They live about two hours from me near Longview, Tx.
