Gunga Din-1 (From Eric Beheim)

Gunga Din-1, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

This photo of Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. was taken in 1938 during the filming of one of the greatest adventure films of all time GUNGA DIN. Since just about everyone who reads this blog has probably seen this film either in a theater or on television, here are just as few highlights from the sequences involving elephants. (At least four elephants were brought up for the location photography, which was done in the hills near the town of Lone Pine, located about a 3 ½ hour drive north of Los Angeles.)

The GUNGA DIN company spent 10 weeks on location in Lone Pine, including 8 weeks during the summer of 1938 when the temperatures ranged from 105 to 115 degrees during the day.

Eric,
What made Gunga Din the picture it was it's famous Hollywood director, George Stevens.
The director that made Shane and Penny Serenade. And we all know Shane is an all time classic and made Alan Ladd.
I can hear the RKO executives screaming for all the money he spent on making it.
And like you said it was just behind Gone with the Wind for making money.
TCM has a 2 hour plus show on George Stevens and you can see some of his Kodachrome home movies of Gunga Din.
If it was not for King Kong Radio pictures would have been broke in 1933.
