This and the next four frame enlargements are from the sequence where Victor McLaglen doctors a sick elephant. (A member of the John Ford “stock company” McLaglen is probably best remembered today for his roles in such John Ford/John Wayne films as FORT APACHE, SHE WORE A YELLOW RIBBON and THE QUIET MAN.) |

We remember that McLaglen won his Oscar for Best Actor in 1935's THE INFORMER, and was nominated as Best Supporting Actor for THE QUIET MAN, a 1952 film.
The crafty John Ford chose to shot the famous “trial” scene from THE INFORMER on a day that Victor McLaglen arrived on the set with a bad hangover from a party he’d attended the night before. McLaglen’s stammering and his slow, stupid responses to the questions put to him during this sequence might not have been entirely the result of good acting.
