OBITUARY
LEE SOLTERS
1919 - 2009
Lee Solters, veteran public relations executive, died at home Monday morning, May 18, 2009 in West Hollywood, CA. Solters’ clients included some of the most significant personalities and companies in the entertainment industry, including Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Michael Jackson, Dolly Parton, Whitney Houston, Paul McCartney and Wings, Led Zeppelin, Eagles, Gregory Peck, Carol Channing, Yul Brynner, Cary Grant, Caesars Palace, businessman Marvin Davis, the Muppets, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, Mae West, Robert Q. Lewis and Broadway impresario David Merrick. Among Broadway productions Mr. Solters represented were “Guys and Dolls,” “Funny Girl,” “The King & I,” “My Fair Lady, “ “Camelot,” plays by Tennessee Williams, Arthur Miller, Neil Simon, among other marquee names and more than 300 musical and straight plays.
A 1941 New York University Graduate, Mr. Solters was born in Brooklyn, New York on June 23, 1919 to Russian immigrants who put him through school working at times as a tenement janitor and tailor. At Eastern District High School, in Williamsburg, NY, he became a stringer for the New York Times covering High School basketball games. After military service, where he wrote for “Stars & Stripes,” Mr. Solters partnered with James J. O’Rourke in their publicity firm, Solters O’Rourke. With Harvey Sabinson joining shortly after, the firm broke ground by creating legendary public relations campaigns. Mr. Solters was the principal in several of the entertainment industries most influential and groundbreaking public relations agencies including partnerships with Sheldon Roskin, and Monroe Friedman when the company branched into Los Angeles. Mr. Solters has enjoyed a partnership with Jerry Digney since 2001.
Many of the entertainment industry’s most influential entertainment executives got their start under the tutelage of Solters. To a person, they credit their work ethic, thoroughness, professionalism and talent to Mr. Solters’ mentoring, as well as the daily requirement for publicists to turn in at least one “item” daily.
Lee Solters is survived by daughter, Susan Reynolds, son, Larry Solters; grandchildren, Jonah Reynolds and Maxie Solters, and great grandson, Elijah Reynolds.
