The canopy had been removed from the wagon by Christy in the 1920s and they forgot to return it to the proper position before the wagon was shipped to Maynard's place in CA in 1936. As a result, it remained stored in Texas until the early 1960s, when it was finally reclaimed and returned to its rightful position. Such canopies were part of the earliest of circus processional vehicles of the 1840s, originally intended to shield "royal" occupants from the sun's rays. Also found in Texas and taken for preservation were the skulls from a couple Asiatic elephants.
