from Eric:
I vaguely recall that, back in the early 1970s, someone framed a new Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show and that the Felds tried to shut it down, claiming that they owned the title. As I recall, the courts eventually ruled that the name "Buffalo Bill" was in the public domain. I do know that a wild west show folded in San Diego back about that time, and that the local musicians who were hired for the band never did get paid.
The fellow that framed the show, Montie Montana, was bankrupted by the court action, which is one way to win when you can't do it in the field. Actually, the court decision, I believe, ceded the right to the title to Montana in one state, to Feld elsewhere. It was a pyrrhic victory. There hasn't been appropriate use of the BBWW title since.
