Unfortunately these pictures of "Jumbo", from the Museum of Natural History are about 5th generation Xerox copies but the best I have. Possibly some viewers have better copies. I suspect this particular photo comes from the Paris Zoo in the early 1860's.

That's a good question. I never heard of him being referred to with any other name.
I had heard that in at least one language in Africa, Jumbo means elephant.

Until seeing this timeline, I never realized how little time he spent with Ringling. Legends can be created pretty quickly. cc
