The Mighty "Jumbo" #1

Unfortunately these pictures of "Jumbo", from the Museum of Natural History are about 5th generation Xerox copies but the best I have. Possibly some viewers have better copies. I suspect this particular photo comes from the Paris Zoo in the early 1860's.

JUMBO
1861 Captured in Abassinia at 18 months of age and three and a half feet in height
1861-64 Jardin des Plantes Zoo- Paris, France
1865-82 Royal Zoological Society- London, England
1882 Purchased by Barnum & London Circus for $10,000
1882-85 P.T Barnum & Great London Circus (James A. Bailey and James L. Hutchinson partners)
Killed at St. Thomas, Ontario 9/15/85 when struck by train while loading.

That's a good question. I never heard of him being referred to with any other name.

I had heard that in at least one language in Africa, Jumbo means elephant.

Until seeing this timeline, I never realized how little time he spent with Ringling. Legends can be created pretty quickly. cc
