That 2 years we spent on Vargas, Rex was there too, I read a short poem once that described us to a T. "You pride yourselves on tales of yore, it's too bad you can't remember how many times you've told those stories before." But you know, it seems no matter how many times we told them, they never lost their kick. Rex, now that you're on that "Big Show", I hope you finally found the answer to, "What ever happened to One Armed Paul"!
This picture looks a lot like BEN. Can you imigine having the two, REX and BUCKLES as mentors. I can not vision REX or BUCKLES in a loin cloth. Choked on my coffee on that vision. I should mention Mr Woodcock was around when BEN was growing up also
When I had my rides booked with United Shows of America, in the mid- 80's, I became friends with Rex. We would go for breakfast in the morning, then do other errands. One day, at the West Palm Beach Fair, after returning to the lot, Rex and I were cutting up jackpots, near the elephant ride platform, when out of the clear blue sky, THE PUNK, ran up and gave me a headbutt in my chest, then turned and ran about 50 ft. away, and just stood there. It knocked me cold for a short time. When I came too, my head was bleeding, as I had hit it on the ride platform on the way down. Rex did two things, immediatly, chain THE PUNK, and take me to his trailer, where Ava patched me up. So I have the honor of being the first casualty, from THE PUNK.
Wow Beth, you are too much. Do you copy down everything that is ever said here? I have only seen a few of your posts before they were deleted.
Just so you know, I grew up in the circus. Everyone I ever knew in circuses or even zoos lived for there animals. No expense was ever spared. Their lives were dedecated to the animals they were in charge of. The animals (from dogs to chimps to elephants ) were part of each circus trainers family. My father's animals got a large heated barn 10 years before my mom got a house. Does that tell you something? The animals come first in the circus. Their care and well being come first. I wish PETA and those other orgs took a small part of what they make (millions by the way) to helping any animal, but they don't. All they do is use the money to spread their propaganda and pull in more money from good hearted people who don't know any better. I bet you may even be one of those people. The Animals right business is a big money maker these days. And they are making millions. Circus people care about their animals but the Animal Rights people only care for the "all mighty dollar."
It's too bad you just can't understand that. Darlene
PETA only likes to kill all the animals that they try to help
"The counties learned that most animals instead had been euthanized after two PETA workers were arrested and charged with dumping dead animals in a shopping center's garbage bins.
Northampton County decided last week to stop working with PETA until the criminal cases against the two are resolved.
Since 2001, PETA has taken animals from shelters in Bertie, Hertford and Northampton counties and the town of Windsor.
Documents filed with the state of Virginia showed that PETA euthanized about 6,100 domestic animals from 2001-03. Daphna Nachminovitch, director of PETA's domestic animal and wildlife department, said she didn't know how many were from North Carolina.
"Did we euthanize some animals who could have been adopted? Maybe," Nachminovitch said. "The point is that good homes are few and far between. Our aim here was to stop them from dying an agonizing death."
Beth, you told me that you had a Company to run and better things to do since the circus that annoyed you had left the State. Now you are simply on a fishing expedition "Shame on you!".

No my mom says that is not the one she remembered. But thanks anyway. I will add it to my collection.

Looks like a movie star. Got the pleasure to be around Rex only breifly, but alittle time was better than none at all.

Rex was a wonderful guy, and I consider it an honor and privalige to have known him.
In this picture, he bears a strong resemblance to Charlton Heston.
hey beth,
do you own a dog?
do you put a leash on that dog?

Damn, now Meth is getting the attention she craves.
The elephant in the Pete and Norma act were named Mary, Maude, Bessie Norma and Conti.
During the winter of 1957/58 they wintered at the Cristiani winterquarters in Sarasota.
I remember how velvety soft their skin was.
Also on April 1, 1959 I was drafted in the Army and Rex got up at 5:00 AM to driveme to the bus station, shook my hand and wished me good luck.
A real gentle man and a real gentlman.
We need more like him in this business.
Robert Mitchell
To Robert Mitchell - well said.
