The Artificial Insemination was Chappie Fox idea, he even had a Professor from U. of Minnesota and others who had fashioned a condom out of an automobile inner tube.
One day we were applying the device on "Vance" everyone wearing white smocks to make it look official. Afterward while they were examining the evidence my mother who was visiting and had seen these goings on thru our trailer window, came out and yelled "Buckles, I saw that, you get in here right now and wash your hands!"
Maintaining my best clinical expression I tried to pretend I hadn't heard her but she repeated even louder "You heard me!" so I went trudging off.

I think I just discovered " another " my favorate photo of Barbara and Anna May ! This one is exceptional !

I also helped photograph those experiments for a middle eastern doctor from Michigan, 1977 ? It is my understanding today that back than an elephant was unable to conceive by means of artificial incemenation - so these were ground breaking experiments.

I remember having to get the boys excited! Yeah, I had to wash my hands too Buckles! Just trying to hang on while they got off was a chore! That warm water in the toy did the trick! Gary

Is this the sex part of sex and violence? I can just see you guys during this and need to change my skivies again. If I keep laughing so much on this blog I am going to have to make a trip to Victories Secret for a new stock of undies.

Open question for any and all, I have written a book about America's Elephants that touches on the breeding and Artificial Insemination as part of the future of elephant existance. It's currently in the finding a publisher stage through a Literary Agent. Would anyone have any photos that I could use of the collecting of semen? Rest assured you will be given full credit for the use of your Photos. If so, please respond and we can get together via email, mail, phone, or whatever. Thanks,
Bob

I've got a couple of the deed being done but I think I should send them directly to Bob lest I offend my highly sensitive audience, especially Rebacca.

My wife remarked last night that people must think I go thru life followed everywhere by a paid photographer.

Buckles I have seen elephants breeding. I just think it is funny the way you guys talk about it. A man in the saint louis area [now in the dog setting business] used his arm to do the semin thing to the female because he had the longest arm. I get a lot of new undies out of this. I have always thought people were silly about breeding both animals and humans. How the hell did we all get here? Besides it can be a lot of fun. Wish I had done more of it.

You once told the story about a person giving you the wrong board when loading the elephants on Vargas. It reminds me of my spelling. His reply was, I know how to do it, I don't have to know how to spell it.

Wasn’t the warm water fill jumbo condom called a Ketchem

Bud...My guess is that the middle eastern doctor you referred to is Jesheskel Shoshani, Ph.D. In 1977 Dr. Shoshani founded the Elephant Interest Group, an international non-profit which promoted interest in elephants for research and conservation. I beleive he was connected with Wayne State University. I was a subscriber and remember writing checks to Wayne State U.

Possibly it was someone else but I would bet this was the guy. He is co-author of "The Illustrated Encylopedia of ELEPHANTS", originally published by in 1971 by Salamander Books, London. The edition I have was published in 1997 by SMITHMARK PUBLISHERS, New York.

Buckles, you mean that you don't "go thru life with a paid photographer?" Just kidding of course you don't. It is just such a delight to see your photos and hear your stories (no one but you could ever do this)

I think that the performers pictured on the blog did not do or go for entertainment. THEY were it. Taking pictures had to be a great pass time as we seldom left the lot. Running a photo taking and printing shop on the show would have made someone a nice living. But like everyting else on the circus we did it for fun. Thank god the pictures were taken at the time.

Funny that Rebecca should talk about taking pictures because I don't have but one photo of myself in a performance with my tigers. The photos I do have were all taken at home practicing when visitors would come by. Al Conover sent me some one time and I for the life of me can't find them and now Albert's health won't allow him to look for them again.

Same picture thing with me Bob. Some how Kelly Miller Circus has me on their 1960 or 61 Xmas card and I never had seen that picture. It would have been a riot to have had pictures at my traing sessions. I weighted 83 pounds and could and did throw the cat props across the arena. It was thought that I might need a prop man to move them for me during the act. I scare myself sometimes with my power to move mountians if I have to. JC learned to duck and others stayed away when I was in a mood. I was also 19 years old Even Eloise used two hands to move one prop, I had one in each hand. Now I am scareing myself and I am the sweetest little old silver haired lady.

ATT: Bob Cline & John Goodall;
I recall these experiments as the Spring of 1977. The film I shot of this 1 epppisode was handed over to the Dr. when the roll was completed. As Buckles stated this occured a few times within a 3 - 6 mounth period with or by various people. I'm fasinated with the info you passed on to us all. gotta go now thanks again !
