Polack Bros. Circus 1944/ Powers Elephants

These are the three Powers elephants of Vaudeville fame "Jennie", "Julia" and "Lena" that were originally trained for the Walter L. Main Circus at the turn of the Century and shown here in 1944 at Davenport, Iowa posing with the Barnum & Bailey "Two Hemispheres" band chariot while with the Polack Show.
They are certainly in beautiful shape, you won't see anything like this in the jungle. Most people think that in their natural habitat they frolic all day in a field with a waterfall nearby and graze with unicorns. I remember 30 years ago when you purchased them from the wild, they were malnourished, scarred and infested with external ticks and lice as well as an incredible assortment of internal parasites. It sometimes took weeks of medical care before you would even think of training them.

Tes has a spot on their web stating MISTY the elephant has turned over a new leaf and take her medicine willingly and all do to the loving care they provide. Treating her for a illness that she doesn't have and has been through all of this for years of course she is used to it. The only thing different is tes kisses her ass before inserting the medication.

After leaving Davenport, Iowa, the "Two Hemispheres" bandwagon went to the Circus Hall of Fame in Sarasota. With the pending auction of the Hall of Fame collections, they were purchased along with the "Two Hemispheres" bandwagon by John and Jan Zweifel of Orlando, FL. The "Two Hemispheres" bandwagon is on loan to Circus World Museum and has been in a number of editions of The Great Circus Parade in Milwaukee as well as Baraboo.
