Fellini suffered a breakdown during filming that threatened the production. His recovery was steadily assured by the devotion of Giulietta. He returned, and his film won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. Their marriage endured for 50 years. Giulietta's death came just five months after her husband's.
The early and mid-50s gave us another gritty European circus film, this one directed by Elia Kazan. MAN ON A TIGHTROPE starred Frederic March, and was based on the true story of the escape from East Germany by Circus Grumbach. In a segue from her turn as DeMille's elephant girl, Angel, Gloria Grahame takes to the sawdust again as the wife who demands the show carry on when March dies, and the show barely makes it through the gate to Bavaria.
