I remember going to the side show at the Jackson County Fair, in Jackson, MI. and seeing the sword swallower swallowing a florescent tube as part of her act. They turned off the lights in the tent so that you could see it glow in her throat. I thought that was pretty neat. They also had the headless woman doing her act. You had to pay a quarter to see how she had sat in the chair so that she looked like she had lost her head.

Many of the sword swallowers who swallowed neon tubes lost their lives doing that routine when the tube broke and the shattered glass and neon gas did them in.
