People would ask why his face was faded out and I had no answer. I heard my father once say that in India it was a sign of Good Luck.

I too would have asked that question, Buckles. This is what I found on the internet and also what I was told by a zoo vet years ago -

Occurs just as much in captivity as it does in the wild. It is nothing more than pigmentation in the skin... kinda like how humans can have freckles. It can also change as they age just as our skin pigmentation can change as we age.

Nothing is wrong with them

Isn't this pink pigmentation, in excess, what Barnum tried to pass off as his White Elephant?
