From Chic Silber

Here is an old drawing of a 150 top in section view.
The term "round top" referred to the end sections 4 of which could make a complete circular top without middles.

As I mentioned yesterday this top

would have measured 160 when flat

in order for the erected width to

actually be 150 feet inside which

led to some calling it a 160

Newer 150s were 150 in the flat

Leif mentioned that the actual

term for a round top with any

number of middles was an oblong

but "round" became the commonly

used moniker (like doniker)

I am grateful for my many visits

with Leif in his last 2 shops

where I learned a wealth of lore

& knowledge of so many things

The newer 150s actually measured

about 140 to 142 inside depending

upon the bail ring trim height

From the 200 foot drawing shown

above it would have taken eight

of those end sections in order

to make a complete round

When i was with NBC Entertainment Tom Sarnoff asked me to find someone who could build a top big enough for the Disney On Parade and Peter Pan shows. Of course Leaf was the only one to go too. Your right about learning things from him. Also Harold Barnes helped a lot with the design and rigging of them. When we tour the Far East we had 2 sets of poles and rigging which shipped by container and the canvas add side poles flew on a Flying Tiger DC8 stretch freighter.
