A long time ago, when I worked at the Smithsonian, I produced for several years a spring festival themed around popular entertainments. Ward Hall put together a side show set up facing the Mall and one of the acts was sword swallower John Trower. I had met John a few years previously and given him some information on Karmi (real name Joseph Hallworth) and his act. To my delight and surprise, John recreated Karmi’s act seen here of swallowing a loaded gun barrel and firing it while down his throat. Also as part of the Smithsonian event I had banner painter Johnny Meah demonstrating the painting of a banner—and it was for this act! I don’t know where the banner is today but my portrait appears somewhere in his painted crowd scene.

Virgil the magician told me he saw the Karmi show and recalled this shooting the cracker number.

Jim: Whether Karmi used Nabisco Saltines or some inferior product has unfortunately been lost.
