The smaller (to their parent Beatty-Cole) King and Sells-Gray shows always had great lettering. The best circus paint jobs of modern times was the work of Roger Boyd who was on King about this time. (His painting was a great influence on Dennis Gilli's work of the last few decades when not using an air-brush.) I recall Roger showing me his collection of tickets that he had just bought from John Cloutman, if I remember correctly. I caught King with a brand new white canvas big top that year (used but three days) when they played for a church sponsor and had only seven people at the matinee!

I think that ticket wagon has a Roger Boyd paint job.

Now that I look closer, I see that's not the midway at all. Still looks like Roger's painting whatever it is.

In Texas or Louisiana in the Spring we would get King or Sells and Gray before heading North.
Mari Jo Cowels was so nice to us fans and made you feel at home there.
I took Whitey Black to lunch in Eunice, Louisiana and had a great time.
The show had a 2:30 only and the tent was completely full up to the rings an they made the money that day.
Harry Hammond was on Sells and Gray in the office and the first time ever I got to eat in a cook house.
Beatty Cole we got in Sept or Oct. and God bless Edna Antes, what a class act and the best to us fans.
And yes Roger Boyd did the best paint job ever and he really flashed up a circus.
Mr. Flint like you I spent the whole day and memories I will never forget.

I beleive that is the Midway, just do not have the marquee set up yet...The 2 trailers on the right I beleive to be the Sideshow Banner line..

Right Jim, Those are the bannerline trucks you can see the panels folded down on the top. If you enlarge the picture it looks like they`re setting the jacks & stringers in the big top. Looks like their setting up on a football field with the goalpost in the foreground.

Ah ha! So I was right to begin with!

My biggest mistakes are when I think I was wrong and it turns out I was right.

I did that on a Tuesday back in 1974, so this makes two.

I always liked the Front ends of King and Sells and Gray...Perhaps because my Teeth were cut seeing these shows as a kid year after year...I always dreamed if I took out a circus they would be framed in similiar fashion to these 2 shows...Unfortunately, that will never happen, except in the Dreams of my imagination...
