John Milton Herriott,
I think you missed the boat with Henry......

A year or two back there were some postings about Max Gruber to which I was a contributor. I remain interested in the talented trainer and have since discovered a program dated by someone as "about 1908" for "Lord George Sanger's Grand Colosseum Circus now in the 52nd year of its glorious career" listing as display 16 "The Giant Elephant in a new and original performance under the guidance of Max Gruber." I understand the item is in the National Fairground Archive at the University of Sheffield in the UK. Their lively curator, Vanessa Toulmin, made two presentations at the recent CHS convention.

I am like you Dick in my fascination of Max Gruber. We know of his fine Elephant, dog and Zebra act with Tom Mix Circus and later I saw Bud E. Anderson [had a big tent circus] when he played Barnes-Carruthers fairs with this act that he had bought and as a youth still recall how good it was. The elephant was named Eva. My Dad had trained elephant, pony and dog acts and I have done the same with Gil Gray and then at the CWM mostly because of seeing and hearing my Dad talk aqbout Max Gruber.johnny
