My comment vanished. Let's see if it survived somewhere, or I'll try later.

At about this time, a most ambitious young Mabel Stark had experienced her epiphany with tigers, and became single minded about becoming the best with them. She learned quickly that this was a deeply intricate profession, demanding skill, devotion, and advanced knowledge. To position her career to the best advantage, her apprenticeship to Louie Roth needed his attention strictly on her alone. She edged out other women hopefuls by getting Louie to the altar, on May 18, 1917, in Boise, Idaho. She made no bones about learning her profession "by sleeping with the right animal trainer." After what she described to me as "the war years", her intense three-year education from Roth ended with their divorce in May, 1920, in Portland, Oregon. But by then, she had learned all that he brought over from the Hagenbeck school, and earned her reputation as the Tiger Queen.
