Smokey told me that when Smith came to the Dailey show he spent the first few days walking around the lot taking notes which was met with considerable derision from the Old guard. The show's flat cars always loaded in the same order so one night when one wagon broke down everything came to a halt. Smith showed up and asked what the hold up was and then pointed to another wagon and said, "Send that one up". The trainmaster reluctantly obeyed and to everyone's surprise it fit perfectly. Later Smokey asked Smith how he knew it would fit and he explained that with that particular make car (Warren?)the bolts on the side of the gunnels were always placed exactly two feet apart.
Wasn't Duke [Keller] with the show from about 46 to about 1950 or 51?Would love to see or hear more on the Dailey show, including who all was there.I take it Rex and Singh, were there, right? Is it also true Singh came in with a group of Ind.elephants Ben bought?I remember hearing something like that!
i AM AMAZED THAT ALL THE EMINENT HISTORIANS THAT ARE QUITE FAMILIAR WITH GEORGE SMITH IN THOSE CRUCIAL rINGLING YEARS HAVE NOT COMMENTED.Before Hathaway died unexpectancy Smith was to become mgr. of the recently acquired Floto Show, but suddenly Smith was elevated to be4 the maib honxho of all Ringling Circuses, so the formker mgr. of Floto under the AMC corp.Zack Terrel, which he did do.
