That's British showman Gerry Cottle in front of the painting that he tried to sell at Christies auction house in London just over a year ago. It, and about one-third of the other lots offered, didn’t make their minimum reserve and went unsold. Painted in 1932, “The Grand Parade, Bertram Mills Circus at Olympia” has an interesting history worth noting. Artist Edward Seago (1910-1974) gave the painting to circus owner Bertram Mills. Jimmy Chipperfield then acquired the work before it went to Gerry Cottle. Seago and Dame Laura Knight were just two of a group of famous British artists in the 1930s that were enamored of the circus and even spent time on the road with shows. During the same decade, there were artists in this country as well who were fascinated by the circus such as John Steuart Curry and Robert Riggs.
