On the subject of African elephants, this next set of pictures appear to be related.
On the back of this one is typed, "Carl Hagenbeck & 4 performing elephants as trained by him at Stillingen, Germany 1927.
The last two come from a publication of some sort.

Carl Hagenbeck died in 1913, so I wonder who the trainer is...?

Picture 3 and 4 come from a book called Zirkus, wrote by a German writer called Paul Eiper. In his book he names both the African elephant and the trainer, the trainer is a man called Gustav Hundrieser and the elephant is called Safari. Acording to the book the only trained African circus elephant at that time

The name of the Town is Stellingen and that is the part of Hamburg where the Zoo is located. So the elephants would have been trained at the zoo.

Henry, it is true that Hagenbecks Tierpark is situated in Hamburg-Stellingen, and the elephants could have been trained there.

But 1916 Lorenz Hagenbeck bought a circus from Adolf Strassburger which he renamed to Circus Carl Hagenbeck - Stellingen. This circus went on tours (also worldwide) until 1953, and may possibly have included acts like the one on the picture.
