This design for the cover the 1963 Grotto Circus souvenir program would be reused many times over the next few years. In the early 1970s, while I was serving in Vietnam, someone sent me that year’s Grotto Circus program and it featured this same cover, only printed in a different color.

In 1963, the Grotto Circus had a number of sell-out performances, with the ticket scalpers doing a land office business out in front of Public Auditorium. This was back in the days when there were still lots of young “baby boomers” for whom being taken to see the Grotto Circus was one of the most anticipated events of the year. (Those same baby boomers are probably now telling their grandchildren about how they once saw a circus in downtown Cleveland that had three rings and which had trained elephants, lions, tigers, chimps, seals, etc. Amazing!) I understand that it has been many years since a Grotto Circus was last presented in Cleveland.
