Inside was a very nice letter from Mr. Hoffman, who had taken time from his busy schedule to respond to my youthful request to be allowed to play in the band. He patiently explained that I’d first have to join the Musicians Union and be a fully qualified paying member. At the time, I was not quite ready to give up my amateur status, and it would be another four years until I finally got to play in a circus band during an actual performance. |

George E. Hoffman passed away later that year at about the time of the Kennedy assassination. He had been the Grotto Circus’ General Chairman for many years and his name appears quite frequently in old Billboard articles reporting on big city shrine circus doings. I haven’t been able to locate any biographical information about him, but he was probably prominent in Cleveland business circles. Those of you who appeared in Cleveland with the Grotto Circus in 1963 or earlier probably knew him and can maybe tell us more about him.
