The Connecticut-based Gong Bell toy company began in the 1860s and made three of the four pull-toys seen here. The bottom center clown bell ringers are by J. & E. Stevens of Cromwell, CT. Each toy is animated when pulled and the most charming in this photo is at the top, an elaborate trick dog that jumps back and forth through the hoop, each time striking a bell. Acrobats, clowns, and a performing poodle (l to r) ring the bells on the bottom row.
