After working in the Tom Mix unit for several months, Buck was signed to a Fox contract in October 1919 to star in his own western series at $100 per week. (At the time, the studio was squabbling with Mix over his $10,000 a week salary and wanted to have Buck in reserve should Mix decide to walk out.) The studio changed his last name to “Jones” since Gebhart was not acceptable so soon after the war with Germany. Buck’s Fox westerns were well received and by 1928, he was earning $3,000 a week. (One of his westerns was directed by John Ford, who acknowledged that Buck had acting ability.) |
