Mary Calder Rower 1939-11

Mary and her late husband Howard Rower were long time sponsors of the Big Apple Circus, in fact this picture appears to have been taken in the BAC back yard.
Mary will be honored later this month in New York by her two sons Holton and Sandy on behalf of the Calder Foundation, she being the daughter of the celebrated artist Alexander Calder. Barbara and I have been invited but unfortunately won't be able to attend.
The Rowers were the most unpretentious people I ever met, we often attended parties at their Lower Manhattan condo and felt right at home.
Howard and Bobby Gibbs were big buddies, it was later I learned that Howard had vast holdings in Australia populated by camels, hence the immediate connection.
On one of the short jumps in Staten Island, Bobby let Howard drive the camel trailer and afterward threatened to place a notice in Circus Report "Howard Rower Drives The Big Rigs".
In more recent times Mary would contact me directly about events on the Blog. She was puzzled about comments on Dolly Jacobs unaware there were two parties with the same name.
On the day of the celebration we will share a toast to two great people!

Mary was a friend of us all. She certainly showed the love of BAC and in turn we all respected and loved her. She will be missed.

Mary was President of the Board of Directors for the One Ring School House at Big Apple Circus for many years. It was always a pleasure to see her on the lot. She never failed to visit the school and check on the progress of each of the students.

Mary and Howard Rower were terrific people. I believe Howard died a few years ago.

I had the privilege of writing a story for The White Tops about the dedication of the Calder sculpture "The Universe" which was dedicated in the lobby of the Sears Tower, now kinown as the Willis Tower in Chicago on October 25, 1974. The sculpture was composed of a number of moving parts, including a metal pole with rotating flags that stretches from floor to ceiling.

The dedication was preceded by a circus parade down State Street to the Sears Tower. Several wagons from Circus World Museum, Baraboo, WI were brought down to participate in the parade. Mr. Calder rode on one of the wagons.
