After escaping from a maximum-security facility for the criminally insane, Dublin O'Malley (Irish actor Sean McClory) eventually catches up with the Clyde Beatty Circus, which he had trouped with years earlier.

In setting up his shots, the director made good use of the Beatty Circus’ equipment, animals, personnel, etc. In just about every scene featuring actors emoting in the foreground, there is usually some sort of circus activity going on in the background: performers practicing, animals being led into and out of the big top, wagons being moved, workmen repairing equipment, etc. This mise-en-scène is particularly effective during tracking shots when the camera moves with the actors as they walk through the circus backyard.
