This is on EBay- the seller identifies him as "Doves" Miller.

Looks like D.R. to me.

Dores Miller. The writer probably made his "Rs" look like "Vs."

Buckles, if you have any photos or information about Mr. Gates, I would appreciate your helping John Gates III. John's father John Gates Jr. was a great percussionist and set drummer in the broadway Musical pit orchestras as well as touring with several name stars. Thanks

Pete

Dory hated the girls name Dores and in the early years he was always called Dory by those who knew him, family and friends, except his father Obert always called and referred to him as Dores. Dory told me that when he had his wire act he answered an ad for a date by telegram and the reply to him was,"sorry we were looking for a male to do the act. So much for Dores. He billed his wire act as Don Steel and was on Seils Sterling among other shows. Then with nhis Dad the bstarted small with their own Dog and Pony show and when the war hit they went by leaps and bounds. Obert was never comfortable with the big show and would like to havebremained small.tanglefoot.P.S. in the twenties Obert was with my Uncle George Engessers "zellmar bros" with his dog and pony act.

Yes of course it's D R or Dorey or Dores as his father called him. I am always amused at the descriptions these eBay sellers give circus items.

This same seller has a pic of Sid Stevenson as "Photograph of Male Performer." I never caught Sid's act myself.

Tanglefoot, I believe D R told me that the person who ran the ad was Hubert Castle.
