From Buckles

Scan13074, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

My father in law Ruben Ray, was a very good banner man.
Seen here at right on the Dailey Show in 1948, with the
tractor provided by the local dealer and the banner
provided by the show.
At left is Dennis Price "Hungry" with Seils-Sterling "Lucy".

Barbara said it was a lucrative, side income but he usually
managed to blow it every night at the card table in the pie car.

Good clown, good banner man, bad poker player.

Norma Davenport Cristiani, "the youngest elephant trainer at age 15," fondly remembers Rueben Ray not only for his ability to sell banners but also for his persuading local florists to donate a bouquet of flowers to peesent to Norma in the ring. What Norma doesn't remember--like everybody else on the lot she had a multiplicity of duties--is whether Rueben actually painted the banners, which utilized butcher's wrapping paper. Maybe Barbara can shed some light on that, Buckles.
