Die Fleidermause by Johann Strauss ll

Schlarbaum regularly blogs me music of all kinds which I file away.
He recently sent a medley of music from one of my dad's favorite
operas "The Bat" by Stauss.

I just finished mowing part of the lawn and decided to play it while I
cooled off with a beer. Eleven minutes and eleven seconds of great
music.

I've done very little opera work

but I enjoyed the few times that

I was involved due to the most

incredible late Sarah Cauldwell

She hired me as Technical Director

for a couple of shows with her

Opera Boston & I also did special

effects for "The Bat" using some

of the flying bats that I created

for "Dracula" on Broadway

She was a delightful director &

could infuse great interest in an

art form for which I cared little

My First Formal Theatre Stage Set Design was Johann Strouss's
" The Gypsy Barron "
a Three Act Operetta -
I WAS Quite Excited to become involved with the Monmouth Conservatory of Music as there new productions Set Designer - BUT -
When Introduced to the Cast ;

This is Bud
Our Set Designer
who Just Previously Worked For
RB,B&B CIRCUS !

The Entire Cast IMEDIATELY &
SPONTAINEOUSLY LAUGHED OUT LOUD !

( Did you ever loose your breath )

Needless to say ;
They were a Gifted but Alien Group that in the End -
I aquired A Last Laugh !
A L O N E
as I continued down Life's Path into the Next Adventure .

Sorry about their reaction Bud

I have been incredibly fortunate

as my circus background has been

of great benefit in the theater

I am often sought out for things

that might have some relationship

Maybe that's 1 of the differences

between theater & opera folks &

why I have never cared for opera
