Sabu #9 (From Eric Beheim)

Sabu-9, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

After escaping from Jaffar, Abu gets more than he bargained for when he inadvertently releases a malevolent genie (Rex Ingram) from a bottle. Once again using his street smarts, Abu turns the tables on the genie and then makes use of his magic powers.

Aided by the genie, an “All Seeing Eye,” and a magic carpet, Abu ultimately defeats the evil Jaffa, restores Ahmad to his throne, and reunites him with the princess. The film ends with Abu setting off on the magic carpet in search of new adventures.

Sabu’s last film for Korda was an excellent adaptation of Kipling’s THE JUNGLE BOOK. With World War II raging in Europe, the film was made in Los Angeles, with exteriors were filmed in the Lake Sherwood area and the interiors at the General Service Studio in Hollywood.

Coinciding with THE JUNGLE BOOK's 1942 opening, RCA Victor released a set of records (on its prestigious “Red Seal” label) featuring Sabu narrating a synopsis of the movie story, accompanied by excerpts from Miklos Rozsa’s superb score for the film. This rare album is now considered one of the very first Hollywood soundtrack recordings ever produced.

Following the release of THE JUNGLE BOOK, Sabu settled in Hollywood and appeared in many of the exotic, Technicolor feature films that starred Maria Montez and Jon Hall. In ARABIAN NIGHTS, he has this surprising encounter while emerging from a one of the series' trademark azure pools. Although extremely popular in their day, the Montez-Hall films were assembly-line products that could hardly compare with the quality of Sabu’s earlier films for Alexander Korda. Needless to say, they did little to advance his career.

In 1944, Sabu became an American citizen. During World War II, he served as a tail-gunner in the U.S. Army Air Force, flying missions over the Pacific and earning the Distinguished Flying Cross.
