Maria was a rare genteel lady among the staffers, very much like Miss Edna, who would smile and speak to a young cagehand. Tommy had the props when I arrived, in '64, but when George Werner died, Tommy immediately inherited the Big Top also and became the hardest-working man I've seen on a circus. Naturally, these two posts exhausted the man, and when he had scant moments to sleep, word went out on the lot that no matter what the problem, you did not knock on Tommy's door. Even their children, Maria and Carlos, kept it very quiet around the trailer.
