Gunga Din-13

Gunga Din-13, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

Four elephants appear in the long and elaborate sequence showing the British army marching to attack the temple stronghold. Here they are seen carrying disassembled Gatling guns. (This is probably based on actual 19th Century British Army practices.)

political correctness is such a yo-yo these days in a way I miss films like this one! but....
Regarding the guns on elephants - at least one year Lord George Sanger's circus over here FIRED them while still on their backs! True, just an effect/loud bang though I'd not have wanted to be an elephant in that item. This even helps add to your thought they were carried that way by the British Army.
One thing they didn't seem to do was use their machine guns on camel-back - a number of British papers/several books credit Barnum & Bailey in 1898/99 teching 'em how to do that!
