Mark, thanks. Sure aren't many elephants like the old days. Gunther and Axel wouldn't have much to do these days. John
John and Mark - - -Thanks.
This must be the unloading for the United Center downtown.
My impression is the entire train went to Rosemont but for the move later downtown only the elephant cars were involved - -better than to walk them all the way. I believe the passenger cars stayed out near Rosemont and the folks just commuted downtown (ca. 8 miles). Likewise, the equipment was hauled (trucked) from Rosemont downtown. Then, for the load out downtown, all of the train will be there and it is off to FL. There will be a brief respite before the Red cranks up again for 2010.
This looks like a red Canadian Pacific locomotive.
Note how the forward rail car has its electrical lines running through a metal sheath on top. That is a newer adaptation. Just when it was done I do not know. I noted it on the Blue cars when they were here (Atlanta) in February.
The elephant with the stars tattooed on her flanks was from the last group imported from SE Asia before imports of new stock were banned. They are said to have come from Burma (Myanmar) but that place has been off limits for many years under the severe government which controls it. I'm inclined to say they were from Thailand.

I showed the United Center with the Blue Show in 1994, I think it was brand new. Show had 23 elephants.
We took the menage elephants (15) out onto the street along side the building for a long mount publicity picture.
A Cop told me that the cleared area across the street was where the old Chicago Stadium had stood.
We did indeed jump from there to Rosemont thence to the Fairgrounds in Orlando where I had eight days to get "Romeo" and "Juliet" laid down and sat up before the show reopened in West Palm.
While driving Kay to school I happened to recall that marching back to the cars in Chicago we passed the building where they taped the Oprah Winfrey Show, it was out of town a ways.
The TV crew just happened to be exiting the building and gave us a Howdy Doo. A few walked along for a few block claiming to have once been on the show as prop guys, etc.
The Oprah, is soon to be history.
Saw the show Sunday at Rosemont, with the newer setup with the more open arena the 11 Elephants really looked very good. Where now days does the ticket purchasing public get to see 11 Elephants doing a "long mount" and filling the arena floor. Lots of color, movement, and wardrobe, the crowd love it. Ralph from Baraboo
Taking my kids on Wednesday to see the show at the UC. They can't wait, as much I like to tell them how the show used to be they pretty much just know it how it is today and while its alot smaller and different from the shows of the 80's and 70's , there's still nothing like the look on their face once they enter the arena and see the show set up.
