Bello look-alikes #1 (From Eric Beheim)

Harold Lloyd, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

The recent BA headshot of Bello reminded me that I’ve never seen the story behind his hairdo. When did he start wearing it that way and for what reason? Here are two possible sources of inspiration for it:

Harold Lloyd (1920)

Robert J. Van de Graf invented his electrostatic generator in 1929.

Shakespeare wrote about hair standing on end in "Hamlet," 1603. "I could a tale unfold, whose lightest word would harrow up thy soul, freeze thy young blood, make thy two eyes, like stars, start from their spheres, thy knotted and combined locks to part and each particular hair to stand an end, like quills upon the fretful porpentine."

Better yet, a 1656 definition from "Glossographia, or a dictionary interpreting such hard words as are now used": "Horripilation, the standing up of the hair for fear... a sudden quaking, shuddering or shivering."

Is it really Bello’s hair? If so, how does he get it to stand up like that? Does he wear it that way all the time? (If so, I’d hate to have to sit behind him in a theater!) If it’s really his hair, what does he do with it at night? Put it up in rollers? What does he do with it when he is in street clothes? Wear a hair net? What does he do with it when he goes swimming? Just curious.

Bello told me that when he was young, he got a very bad sunburn on the top of his head. Determined to never let that happen again he let it his hair grow long. I understand that his wife cuts his hair for him now. He says that he keeps it up by using a combination of hairspray and viagra.
A nicer fellow you'll never meet.
