I would bet the farm those were not Beatty's words at all. Right from the mouths of screen writers.
During the filming of THE WIZARD OF OZ, there is a scene where Margaret Hamilton, as the Wicked Witch of the West, vanishes in a burst of red smoke followed by fire. Back then, to achieve this effect, a trap door was used to drop her down through the stage floor while a burst of smoke covered her disappearance. One she was clear, the fire was turned on. The first take went perfectly. Then the director Victor Fleming called for a second take. This time, the trapdoor jammed and Hamilton’s face was painfully burned.
But of course ... it is all in the screen, (papers)
at that time and ages, it was very exited, cant not compare with today Movies.
he did a good job, there were no one else.
sincerely Mireille...
Miss Hamilton once said in an interview that her family dared her to have placed on her tombstone:
"The Wicked Old Witch is Dead!"
"I read that originally the writers came up with a beautiful Wicked Witch like Walt Disney had used in Snow White and Gale Sondergaard was tested."
When I worked for The Music Fairs
a chain of tented summer stock
theaters in 1960 Margaret Hamilton
starred in 2 productions
She was a most down to earth
and delightful lady that was
very friendly to all
Although older than most of
the company she behaved like
a happy youngster
The words were in collaboration with Earl Wilson, in the book JUNGLE PERFORMERS, (New York, McBride, 1941) on pages 201-206. The movie boys were not involved.
